Chile name Bielsa as new coach

10 august 2007 21:44

SANTIAGO (AFP) - Former Argentina coach Marcelo Bielsa has taken over the reins of the Chilean national team, the country's federation said Friday.

Press reports earlier in the day had claimed that Bielsa, who has also coached Espanyol in Spain, was about to sign a deal.

And he has committed himself to the job until the end of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, with the Chilean federation clearly hoping he will be able to guide the country to the finals.

"He has accepted our offer and is ready to work for Chilean football," said Chilean FA president Harold Mayne-Nicholls.

Bielsa was coach of Argentina from 1998 until 2004 and was at the helm during Argentina's disastrous first round exit at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

He ended his tenure of the Argentine national team by guiding the country to the Olympic gold medal in Athens in 2004, as well as the Copa America final that same year.
